Hello, my name is

Elysia Smyers

I build human-centered online systems.

I graduated from Stanford University in March 2024 with a BS in Symbolic Systems and MS in Computer Science. Along the way, I've explored product management and operations management, but have developed a true passion for engineering. I love engaging in hands-on work designing and building systems that take into account users' needs at every step of the way.

Graduate Course Assistant

Stanford School of Engineering

  • (CS278: Social Computing, Spring 2023) Assisted Professor Michael Bernstein with teaching, grading, and orchestrating quarter-long project work for 170 computer science students
  • (AA228/CS238: Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Fall 2023) Assisted Professor Mykel Kochenderfer with his course of 440 students that covers algorithms for building real-world decision-support systems; held twice-weekly office hours and contributed 10-15 hours per week to grading
  • June 2023 - September 2023

    Software Engineering Intern

    PostEra

  • Worked on Proton, an end-to-end machine learning platform to close the Design-Make-Test cycle of Medicinal Chemistry
  • Designed and built a Django model (Python) and exposed endpoints (Python, Typescript) for chemists to save and view synthesis route objects
  • September 2022 - June 2023

    Student Researcher

    Stanford Intelligent Systems Lab

  • Constructed an open-source repository (Python) for closed-loop simulation and evaluation of vision-based models for the aircraft detect-and-avoid problem
  • First-authored a paper on our work accepted to NeurIPS 2023
  • June 2022 - September 2022

    Technical Program Management Intern

    Meta

  • Worked with Meta's Applied Privacy Technology Team within the Privacy Infrastructure, which supports the privacy and security of 3.8+ billion users across all of Meta's platforms
  • Developed H1 2023 roadmap for a cryptography-based privacy-enhancing technology by aligning internal and external stakeholders, working directly with engineers to support Meta’s data use minimization goals
  • March 2020 - February 2022

    Head of Operations

    The Marriage Pact

  • Managed day-to-day operations, onboarding, scheduling for a rapidly-growing startup of >50 employees working to reach a million students across 250 campuses in the next year
  • Contributed to 1,000\% growth in my first year on the team (10,000 students -> 115,000 students)
  • Engineered internal applications to automate processes and alleviate bottlenecks across the company, using AWS, GCP, and a variety of APIs with Python and JavaScript
  • June 2021 - August 2021

    DOS Product Management Intern

    Health Catalyst

  • Worked directly with the Data Operating System’s (DOS) SVP of Product Development
  • Conducted interviews with DOS PMs to assess the current use of product management metrics across 20 engineering teams and developed and presented a metric framework based on findings
